Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am 60 years old and diabetic. I have a wound on the ball portion of my left foot that will not heal. My foot surgeon wants me to wear a full cast on the foot for 4-6 weeks. I wore the cast for 2 weeks and woke up one evening with a full out panic attack. The cast had to go. I am a contractor so I used my Dremel tool to remove the cast. My doctor was not happy! He wants me to go back into the cast for 4 additional weeks. He has prescribed .25 Xanax to hopefully ward off another panic attack. I am scheduled to have the cast put back on next Thursday. My emotions are so strong on not having the cast put back on that I do not believe any medicine will alleviate my attacks and allow me to wear the cast for 4 weeks. I would like to try either an orthotic insert or a pneumatic boot. My foot surgeon is not agreeable for me to try either one of these. The doctor has more or less told me that it's either the cast or find another doctor. Do I need to go to another foot surgeon and get another opinion or should I give the cast and Xanax a try? I have worn casts before and never had any issues, This attack came on all of a sudden and I feel it has changed me to the point where I will not be able to tolerate confining any limb in a total cast.
Thanks, Randy
