I Am A 60 Year Old Female Prescribed Flomax For

I am a 60 year old female prescribed Flomax for kidney stones. I can't swallow the capsule whole, I'll choke. The Doctor says I can open it and take it in applesauce, but the label says do not open and the Pharmacist says no also. Is there a reason why I can't open it. I tend to trust my Pharmacist and the manufacturer more than the Doctor. It also says not approved for women???
