I Am Being Given Xanax But I Have No Anxiety

I am being given Xanax but I have no anxiety disorder. I have all kinds of back problems and possibly, or most likely, a pinched nerve. Is there something better than Xanax for me. I don't like the sound of the attributes of this medication. Am medicated for my back which is in constant pain regardless of taking a pain pill, which I hate the medication for this, an addictive drug. I have copd and am advised by my doctor that I would not live through an operation on my back.
