I Am Experiencing Gradually Worsening Pain On The Left Side,

I am experiencing gradually worsening pain on the left side, between ribs and hip. It's not exactly abdominal pain. I have chronic back pain on the left so I can't really tell if there is new pain in my back or not. It is sharp and stabbing pain that is only somewhat relieved by lying down. Any ideas?
