I Am Experiencing Some Discomfort In My Left Top Abdomen

I am experiencing some discomfort in my left top abdomen - slightly toward the side - about the place where the large intestine turns.
Could this be diverticulitis - if so - can it heal itself without medical intervention? How long should I wait before consulting a doctor?
