I Am Experiencing What A Friend Referred To As "nodules"

I am experiencing what a friend referred to as "nodules" in my fingers right below my nail (top of hand). My dad has very arthritic fingers and he said his mom did too. I am only 50 and wondering what this is (RA?) and if they will get worse? Anything I can be doing? THey are sometimes painful, too.
