I Am Weaning Off Citalopram 20mg After Taking For One

I am weaning off citalopram 20mg after taking for one year. I experienced some very difficult situations and was given this as something to help me through- however I do not like being on any medications unless it is totally necessary. I have read every horror story about withdrawals - does everyone have this and what is the best way to prevent withdrawl symptoms.
