I Forgot That I Had A Tampon In, Started To

I forgot that I had a tampon in, Started to smell an awful smell, I still have my period but I have NEVER smelt anything like it. As I was wondering what on earth the awful smell was, I realized I had frogotten that I had a tampon in there. I was able to get it out with much effort but it came out and The smell almost knocked me out. I am worried as the smell is still there. I showered and still smell as do my fingers from preying it out. Not sure what to do now.
