I Had A Persistent Cough That Would Not Go Away

I had a persistent cough that would not go away and I had pain in my shoulder blade periodically and most recently in a particular spot like one spot. I went to doctor and they did a lung xray and it showed an opaque object or area and now they want to do a CT scan what could that mean?
