I Had An MRI On My Back And Doctor Told

I had an MRI on my back and doctor told me I need to go to back specialist to get a shot in my back. I have narrowing in my back and arthritis. What is the shot, cortisone? What will it do to my back? I used to run and work out and I want to be able to do it again.
