I Had Foot Surgery 2/3/16 To Fix Hammer Toe On

I had foot surgery 2/3/16 to fix hammer toe on second toe and remove bunion. I will be having the toe redone at a later date due to the implant turning. my ankle remains swollen and painful. What would cause this? I have always had some swelling but this is extreme.
