I Have 1-2 Toenails That Have Been Affected By Fungus,

I have 1-2 toenails that have been affected by fungus, I assume because I wear socks most of the time. I did go to a doctor to see what could be done (a few years back) and he recommended breaking up my toenails and go nail-less. Do you know how they break up the nail, and is this procedure painless?
