I Have IBS, I Take Donnatal 4x's A Day, However

I have IBS, I take donnatal 4x's a day, however my pain level has sky rocked to a level that is unbearable, I went to see my internal medicine Dr., he advised it is because of stress? I am 68 years old and know my body pretty well now. What should I do to control the pain.
