I Have A 98 Year Old Friend Who Last Night

I have a 98 year old friend who last night and this afternoon has had a loud banging noise in his head that he describes as "like someone is using an old farm machine" and at one point he thought the whole room was shaking, thought someone was using jack hammers outside. The noise has now gone, after four hours. What could cause this?
