I Have A Cough That Cause Me To Swallow Air

I have a cough that cause me to swallow air which gets trapped and incredibly pain. It's worse at night and goes into spasms. Constant coughing creates the air. The cough is a virus passed to me by grandchildren. I am 73 normally very fit not overweight and active. Please advise.
