I Have A Cough That's Been Going On For Several

I have a cough that's been going on for several weeks (8+) and not sure what is causing it. It's kinda like a dry cough which sometimes I cough up a weird particle that has an odor? I cough all day and night and sometimes there is a slight burn sensation. The cough sometimes make me gag. Is there something I can purchase over the counter?
