I Have A Qite Painful Ventral Hernia. My Surgeon Cannot

I have a qite painful ventral hernia. My surgeon cannot get me into surgery until ten days from now. She said that I need to contact my primary care physician to prescribe me pain medication until then. Why can't she prescribe the medication until i am post op. Doesn't make sense to me.
