I Have A Skin Abrasion From Shale Friction While Sliding

I have a skin abrasion from shale friction while sliding in baseball. After the incident I was (even had to scrub) to remove debris while soaking it in soapy water. It is 5 days later and I've been applying polysporin 1-2 times daily. Today the wound has a significant door, and is quite painful. It's about the size of my palm so I would think the pain is expected. However I'm concerned about the coloration redness around the abrasion and scent. How do I know/tell if it has become infected?
