I Have Always Had A Thick Curly Head Of Hair.

I have always had a thick curly head of hair. I am 17 and I noticed I could see my scalp through my hair when wet. When I dried it my hair appeared to return to normal. Then about 6 months later I contracted a bad case of mononucleosis. I had it for roughly a month and a half. After recovering from mono I realized my hair had thinned dramatically. I don't really see hair on my pillow or in my drain. I pulled a strand of hair out of my head and on the root end was a white slime with a black bulb on the end. Is this healthy? Does this sound like male pattern baldness or Telogen Effluvium? Please note that ever since age 14 I've been under psychological stress. Can my hair return to normal???
