I Have Been Prescribed Clarithromycin But Have Been Told That

I have been prescribed clarithromycin but have been told that the side effects are horrendous but I am allergic to penicillin. The doctor wasn't sure what I had but I am now thinking it maybe Strep Throat but I am worried about taking this prescription, is there anything else the doctor would be able to prescribe without the very negative side effects ?
