I have been seeing my dental hygienist every 3 months for a cleaning because a couple of my pockets measure greater than 3. This, along with an occasional dose of Arestin and daily home brushing and flossing, has been sufficient to manage my condition. Recently my dental insurance has expanded and now covers 2 annual cleanings. However, my hygienist tells me that they have to bill my cleanings as Periodontal Maintainance because of my diagnosis of gum disease, and that doing otherwise would be insurance fraud. However, my insurance company tells me that they would cover a regular cleaning if that is what is done. Is a visit for Periodontal Maintainance different than a regular prophylactic cleaning, and if so, how? It seems that all my hygienist does is remove plaque by scraping, then polish my teeth and floss them. That seems like a regular cleaning to me unless I am missing something. Thanks for responding.
