I Have Been Taking 1 Puff Twice Daily Of Flovent

I have been taking 1 puff twice daily of Flovent HFA 110mcg for many years and have been treated for asthma since the mid 70's. Yesterday my doctor (a specialist in asthma, COPD and allergies) told me that, after taking an in depth breathing test - phone booth style, that the tests show I don't need to take the medication and that I should stop taking it immediately. Is this safe, or should I be tapering it off?
