I Have Been Taking Cymbalta For Pain From Arthritis Prescribed

I have been taking cymbalta for pain from arthritis prescribed by my orthopedic surgeon. It was causing me unhappiness and suicidal thoughts so I stopped taking it. Although it was helping with a portion of my pain, I could not continue it. I have been experiencing much more pain now that I have stopped it. Can taking it for a different symptom than what it usually is prescribed for cause me more bad than goodI I am trying to understand why I have had more pain and if it could cause another illness.
