I Have Bruises On Both Sides Of My Lower Back

I have bruises on both sides of my lower back slightly above the waist. They are almost symmetrically opposite of each other close to the sides. The bruises are about the size of an elongated quarter. They hurt when I touch or put pressure on them. Otherwise they just irritating. I have not had any trauma to my back. What can be the cause?
