I Have Developed Several White, Dry Patches On My Scalp.

I have developed several white, dry patches on my scalp. They often itch and small, white pieces of skin will flake off if I scratch them. Is there a treatment I could try at home before making an appointment with my physician, or should I see the doctor now? The condition has been here about two weeks now.
