I have had neck pain for the last several years, but has gotten much worse and constant for the past year, and now having trouble turning my head and have pain going down my right arm with numbness in my thumb, index and middle finger. I have tried ice, heat, muscle relaxers, gabapentin and about everything I can think of without relief. I had an x-ray that shows moderate degenerative disk disease at the C5-6 and the intervertebral joint space moderately narrowed. MRI done yesterday and shows C2-3-Normal, C3-4 Small broad based central disk protrusion without central canal stenosis or neural foraminal., C4-5-Normal, C5-6-There is broad-based central disk osteophyte complex flattening ventral thecal sac. No evidence of central stenosis. There is mild bilateral neural formminal narrowing. C6-7- Small broad based right paracentral disk protrusion flattening ventral thecal sac, There is no evidence of central canal stenosis or neural forminal narrowing. I seen my Orthopedic surgeon last week and after looking at the X-rays suggested that I might need to have my C-6 disk replaced with an artificial disk, and ordered the MRI, but has not seen it as of yet that I am aware of. The pain is unbearable! I am ready to do whatever is necessary to relieve pain. Do you think surgery is necessary, and will it help?
