I Have Had Previous Ankle Surgery Due To Ankle Instability

I have had previous ankle surgery due to Ankle Instability 9 years ago. It was due to frequent ankle sprains and instability. I haven't had any more problems since this up until 6 months ago. I started rolling and spraining my ankle again 6 months ago, one being a severe sprain 9 weeks ago at the beach I walked off the pier onto the beach and missed a step causing my ankle to roll over and myself landing on it. I also heard 4 loud cracking/popping sounds while my foot was rolling over as did my husband. It immediately began swelling and had obvious deformities. I had x-rays that showed no breaks only a sprain. I was informed to stay off of it for 3-5 days then begin bearing weight. I did that and the pain has been very bad and swelling and bruising is still present. I also need to add that I reinjured it a few days ago with only walking on flat ground. What should I do? I am awaiting a referral to an orthopedic doctor but I want to know what may be causing this
