I Have Had Some Anxiety Recently And My Dr Prescribed

I have had some anxiety recently and my Dr prescribed some Alprazolam for short term relief. It works well but he said it is highly addictive. He has moved me to Citalophram for longer term use. I started with 1/2 a 20 mg pill and the first 2 days I took it my anxiety was worse (by far) than I had before. Is this normal and should I stay with it? I know it is supposed to help after a couple of weeks.
