I Have Had What I Think Is An External Hemorrhoid

I have had what I think is an external hemorrhoid for 2 weeks. I have just a slight history with hemorrhoids but they usually go away within a few days. There is discomfort but not excruciating pain, does this mean it may be something else's? And how long should I give it to go away on its own. I keep reading it might take months?
