I Have Intense Pain On My Lower Right Jaw, Out

I have intense pain on my lower right jaw, out of the blue. Went to dentist. He said it was "probably" old large filling in 3rd molar.... And my insurance won't pay for root canal, so I will have to have my tooth pulled. Yikes. Could there be any OTHER reason for this pain? I have had ongoing right sinus infection.... And am diabetic.
