I Have Severe Pain From A Hard Lump Behind My

I have severe pain from a hard lump behind my ear. It started off as moderate pain there about 5 days ago & then after a couple of days my glands in neck were sore & swollen. Yesterday, I noticed that a rash appeared on my neck near the swollen glands.
There is no pain from any part of the rash. The pain I'm experiencing is sharp & shooting, and comes from the lump behind my ear through to the edge of my ear.
I saw a doctor (not my normal one) who said it is shingles & gave me a script for antiviral tablets.
Now I'm home & have a question about the severe pain that comes from the lump behind my ear. With shingles, does the pain usually eminate from the rash area or from elsewhere? I feel I may not have explained the stabbing pain sufficiently to the doctor & don't want the "lump" left untreated if it's a separate problem. Thanks.
