I Have Sharp, Painful Muscle Spasms In My Left Lower

I have sharp, painful muscle spasms in my left lower abdominal area. I've never had this before as when it spasms for a quick second it literal makes me hold my breath and stop what I'm doing. Should I be concerned? I am menstruating so I don't know if it is cramps or should I make an appointment?
