I Have To Go In For A Surgical Procedure, And

I have to go in for a surgical procedure, and have been advised by my GP that my potassium levels are low, I now have to take the prescribed dose on a daily basis leading upto my day of surgery, (23.10.15), can you tell what would be the reason for my potassium levels being low.
