I Have Very Dark Patches On My Upper And Lower

I have very dark patches on my upper and lower cheek and neck area. Is there anything over the counter, or home remedies that I can use to clear up without going to Dermatoligist and getting wrongly diagnosed, and having to play trial and error with very expensive creams
