I Have Very Thick Toenails That Gets Thicker On The

I have very thick toenails that gets thicker on the inside and darker on the outside. Sometimes I try filing them then they look rotten the nails just breaks away leaving toe exposed and sensitive. I was told once b y a doctor that I have a fungus. What do I need to do?
