I Have What I Have Been Told Is A Callous

I have what I have been told is a callous on the center of the ball of my foot. It can be very painful because there is a hard thing that grows in the center and if I step on ii right its a killer. Can it be permanently removed the callous it self is about the size of a quarter. Thank you
