I Just Check My Sugar Level For The First Time

I just check my sugar level for the first time myself and it was 283. Two years ago my doctor put me on metformin which I have not been taking. I have been having some systoms that I thought might be from high sugar and when I checked it today it was too high. How dangerous is 283. I plan to take this medicine and eat no sugar and then go back to the Dr in about a month.
