I Just Had A Mirenda IUD Placed, And The Doctor

I just had a Mirenda IUD placed, and the doctor left the wires long enough to hang outside of my vagina. Is that how it's supposed to be, or should the wires be cut? If cut, how long should they be? I read that the wire is supposed to curl around my cervix.
