I just had lab results showing ALT was 53 and AST at 26. I'm a 67 year old female and have consumed alcohol for 50 years. Previous lab work in 2011 showed ALT was 25, but it was 49 in 2019. My alcohol consumption in the past year has been higher than "normal" - wine almost every day, sometimes more than a glass or two. So, I'm not completely surprised. I've cut out the alcohol for a month and will be going for lab tests to re-check the ALT. My question is, if it is still high, does this mean that I have permanent liver damage? If so, will light to moderate drinking still be a risk for further damage? Obviously, I'd like to return to social drinking. I've had no difficulty abstaining for a month - but I hope to return to moderate consumption on social occasions.
