I Just Noticed A Lump On My Neck Under And

I just noticed a lump on my neck under and behind my right ear. It is about the size of a quarter and slightly tender. I am hoping to get an appt with my doctor on Wed. when I return from a business trip. It's really scaring me as I have never had anything like this. I am female, 56 yo, and in good health. Could this be something serious?
