I Pricked My Thumb On An A Staple And Punctured

I pricked my thumb on an a staple and punctured the skin. There must have been germs on the staple point as over the next week the thumb became red, angry and inflamed. It started to throb. There is a noticeable bump on my thumb at the point where the staple punctured the skin. It is also very sensitive and painful when banged. It is hard to do simple tasks like do up a button. Please advise.
