I Recently Got Bit By My Outdoor Cat That Wasn't

I recently got bit by my outdoor cat that wasn't vaccinated for rabies. There was no puncture, more like its teeth scratched the surface of my skin, with some bruising. I already visited a physician and they said I should get the rabies shots. Is that really necessary? The cat didn't look rabid.
