I Recently Had A Bump In My Gum That Soon

I recently had a bump in my gum that soon developed into a hole in the gum. This tooth is #15 I had a root canal on this tooth about 10 years ago. It only hurts when I bite down on that side. My dentist is recommending tooth extraction. I would prefer to keep my tooth instead of extraction. Can this tooth be saved?
