I Recently Had A Hip Replacement And A Catheter Was

I recently had a hip replacement and a catheter was inserted. When I cam to following surgery the catheter was fairly uncomfortable and didn't seem to be draining well. It was draining some. Anyway, at my request a nurse took it out. That was quite painfully. Then I started bleeding from the penis and lost all control of my bladder. Control has returned 90%and the blood in the urine has subsided. I am still sore in the bladder area and my testicles/scrotum are enlarged. Never had a catheter before, is this normal? I'm 63.
