I Teach An Adult Swim Lesson Client. She's Never Swum

I teach an adult swim lesson client. She's never swum before and when she submerges, she says that water is draining from her ear to her throat causing a stinging sensation. No allergies, previous problems, or current infectionillness. What's causing this?
