Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I wanted to know why a GP would not have a lumbar puncture done for an 83 year old woman who demonstrated signs of dementia (altered gate, memory loss and incontinence). It came on quickly to the patient who in all other aspects was very healthy. It was subsequently diagnosed as Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus and a shunt was installed. However, the CT and lumbar puncture by the neurologist provided the info. The patient has seen remarkable progress and shows no signs of the dementia symptoms.
