I Was Bitten On The Foot By A Pitbull Months

I was bitten on the foot by a pitbull months ago really badly. My foot has healed very good, just a scar left. But the top middle of my foot is still numb. What does that mean and how can I fix it?? I was told it may take a long time before the numbness goes away. This happened Oct 2015. Its now Apr 2016.Also, its still slightly swollen, I have a hard time putting on certain shoes.
