I Was Prescribed Fosamax For Osteoporosis. I Am 61 Yrs.

I was prescribed Fosamax for Osteoporosis. I am 61 yrs. old. I was told that this drug is difficult to absorb and that it must be taken according to very specific directions. How effective is it or would taking calcium and D3 properly be just as effective in slowing bone density.
