I Went To The ER Last Week For An Ankle

I went to the ER last week for an ankle injury. it wasn't broken. I am in a hard cast split and have pain still. They decided to treat it like I break since i have had ankle reconstruction already. How long are you supposed to keep the split on? The doctor didn't specify. Also was recommend to see an orthopedic. Should I take the split off to ice it?
