I Would Like To Know How The Shingles Vaccine Protects

I would like to know how the shingles vaccine protects me. For example, I am told that the Flu vaccine works by giving a person a small "dose" of the flue, making the body eager to development a defense against the flu. Does the shingles vaccine work the same way?
